Baby Central Momtrepreneur: Christina Abraham
As part of our International Women's Day spotlight, we meet Christina Abraham, owner of Pilates Kinetics and mom of two.
1. Tell us more about yourself and your business?
Hi, I’m Christina, owner and instructor at Pilates Kinetics, one of the few Classical Pilates studios in Singapore. Our goal is to help clients get stronger and more flexible to improve their overall health and well-being.
2. How did you get to where you are now?
I started with a job in banking, but was not very interested in it after a few years. At that time, I was doing Pilates to keep fit, and thought it might be a good idea to do an instructor training course. I became an apprentice and it took me 1.5 years to get certified as a Romana’s Pilates Instructor. I went on to work in a Pilates studio for 5 years before starting Pilates Kinetics as a home studio. 5 years later, I decided to take the plunge to open a bigger studio as I am passionate about Pilates and this was an opportunity to teach more and hire instructors to work with me.
3. What were the main challenges you faced, as a woman and mom, when starting up your business?
It’s a huge step up running a studio commercially with employees, compared to working solo from home. The biggest challenge is finding the time to do everything I need and want, which seems almost impossible. I am still figuring how to be fully present in whatever I’m doing especially when spending time with my family, and to enjoy the process of building my business and not expect things to be a certain way right now.
4. What do you love most about your job?
I love helping my clients who started off with body pain become pain-free, move with ease and become fit. Being physically strong and doing things they thought were impossible improves their confidence which is transferred to other aspects of their lives as well.
5. What would your advice be to any woman considering pursing their own business?
If you’re passionate about what you want to pursue, go for it! If you are someone like me who has a lot of self doubt, surround yourself with people who can encourage you and think “Why not?” instead of “No I can’t do this.” Every journey starts with a first step. Even though starting a business is not easy, it’s a process that can be enjoyable if it’s something you believe in!
